Damn the Generation Gap!
by Lucas
The lives of our grandmothers and grandfathers have been very different from our own. Why is that so? This is a question people from Gen Z especially are thinking about.
The perception of what our lives should be like has changed through the years. People are trying to find their purpose or have a special goal they want to achieve while on earth. When I ask my grandma, who is part of the pre-war generation, about her life, she always sounds like she always had a plan. At that time most people got married and then started a family, which for many individuals nowadays is almost inconceivable. I, who is part of Gen Z, am probably like most of the other Gen Z kids in that I don't really know what to do in my life or what it will look like in ten years.
One reason is that we have just got too much time to think about life because the generations that existed before us built the foundations for today’s existence. This may only be my opinion, but when you think about it, about the structures of society that were already in place for us, it seems more conceivable than you first believed.
Moving on from the pre-war generation, what is going on with the individuals of my parents’ generation? I would say Generation X had the same basis to their lives as we have these days, and that is why the contrast between us is far smaller. Nevertheless, members of Gen Z have way more possibilities open to them than all the generations that came before, and probably since.
Given these generational developments, is it any wonder that I, and many others in Gen Z, do not yet know what to do with our lives?
